Description
The exhibition presents a selection of approximately 85 prints by the great photographic chronicler of the Harlem Renaissance, James VanDerZee, taken in his various portrait studios beginning in 1916 and continuing through his 75-year career. Focusing on the portraits he took of Harlem denizens over the decades, the exhibition illustrates VanDerZee's abilty to capture playfulness and innocence, even when the subject was vampish, suave, or sophisticated, which reflects the spirit of an entire era in Harlem as well as in African American culture in general.
